Dr Ella S Mills

Ella joined the Imagining Futures team in April 2023 as Project Co-ordinator. She is a Devon based art historian, curator and researcher of contemporary art, with a focus on championing emerging and over-looked artist-women, predominantly working class, LGBTQ+ and/or of the global majority. Ella is currently Associate Lecturer in the Fine Art and History of Art at the University of Plymouth, and co-director of independent curating practice talking on corners with Lorna Rose. They are committed to supporting artists through exhibitions and new commissions. Recent projects include WE/US: Roman Manfredi, the UK’s first visual art project celebrating butches and studs from working class backgrounds, 2022‘Ritual Touch’, MIRROR Gallery, Arts University Plymouth, 2023; and Three Drops of Blood’, a commission and Devon-wide project of Ingrid Pollard, Thelma Hulbert Gallery, 2022. Ella submitted her PhD in 2016 under Prof Griselda Pollock at the University of Leeds centred on Black British artist-women of the 1980s with a focus on Sonia Boyce, Sutapa Biswas, Claudette Jonson, Lubaina Himid, Maud Sulter and Ingrid Pollard, after which she was Post-Doctoral Researcher on the AHRC Black Artists and Modernism project led by Prof. Boyce. Project partners have included Natural England, Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, Libraries Unlimited, KARST Gallery, Theatre Royal, The Box, Literature Works and V&A.
